April 3: In Class Focus on Story Elements

Ellin Oliver Keene, an expert in reading instruction, teaches that rereading is an important literary skill for understanding and the development of fluency.

Your class job today is to reread chapter one with a partner.  As you reread focus on your job (see below).  Then complete your job.

Jobs:

Laura/Liang/Haeun:  Reread chapter one.  Focus on Ashley.  Find three exact quotes from the chapter (a sentence or two) that tell about Ashley's appearance and/or personality.  Draw a detailed picture of Ashley on 8 1/2 X 11 paper and write at the bottom or around the edges of the page.

Nicholas/Marcos: Reread chapter one.  Focus on Jack.  Find three exact quotes from the chapter (a sentence or two) that tell about Jack's appearance and/or personality.  Draw a detailed picture of Jack on 8 1/2 X 11 paper and write at the bottom or around the edges of the page.

Tamira/Elissa: Reread chapter one.  Focus on Bindy.  Find three exact quotes from the chapter (a sentence or two) that tell about Bindy's appearance and/or personality.  Draw a detailed picture of Bindy on 8 1/2 X 11 paper and write at the bottom or around the edges of the page.

Kayla/Angela: Reread chapter one.  Focus on Olivia.  Find three exact quotes from the chapter (a sentence or two) that tell about Olivia's appearance and/or personality.  Draw a detailed picture of Olivia on 8 1/2 X 11 paper and write at the bottom or around the edges of the page.

Dravin/Kevin/Modib: Reread chapter one.  Focus on Steve.  Find three exact quotes from the chapter (a sentence or two) that tell about Steve's appearance and/or personality.  Draw a detailed picture of Steve on 8 1/2 X 11 paper and write at the bottom or around the edges of the page.

Gabriella/Aarushi:  Reread chapter one.  Focus on Olivia's office in Jackson Hole.  Find three exact quotes from the chapter (a sentence or two) that tell about her office.  Draw a detailed picture of the office on 8 1/2 X 11 paper and write at the bottom or around the edges of the page.

Shawn/Aidan:  Reread chapter one.  Focus on the motel office in Acadia.  Find three exact quotes from the chapter (a sentence or two) that tell about the motel setting.  Draw a detailed picture of the motel setting on 8 1/2 X 11 paper and write at the bottom or around the edges of the page.

Kya/Yana:  Reread chapter one.  Focus on the problem in the story.  Find three exact quotes that tell about the problem. Draw a picture or diagram showing what the problem is on 8 1/2 X 11 paper, then write the quotes at the bottom or around the edges of the page.

Artur/Jaden/Dylan:  Reread chapter one.  Focus on the clues that we already know.  Write a list of clues on 8 1/2 X 11 paper using exact quotes from the text.

  1. The sentence, “Scornfully, Bindy slapped her book onto her bed. “ means that the motel has a bed. The words, “We’re just flipping around the different channels.” explain that the motel has a TV. The quote, “There’s a candy machine at the end of the hall.” describes that there’s a candy machine in the motel. Shawn and Aidan

  2. The words, "Her reading glasses rested on her thin nose like half-moons, while her hair swirled to her shoulders in dark smoky curls."
    shows that Olivia has dark curly hair and a thin nose. The quote, "Olivia, a wildlife veterinarian was frequently called in by the parks to solve animal mysteries" demonstrates that Olivia knows a lot about animals. Angela and Kayla
